Seedling Cruciform & Pellet Counts

NWR Seedling Protocol · Pellet Count Field Survey

How the cruciform works: Four arms (N/E/S/W) radiate from a central point. Walk each arm and record every palatable seedling by height class. The ideal distribution is 40% in 0–15 cm, 25% in 15–45 cm, 20% in 45–75 cm, 10% in 75–135 cm, 5% in 135+ cm — a pyramid shape indicating healthy continuous regeneration.

Pellet Counts

Record pellet counts along each arm of the cruciform. Note whether pellets are Fresh (F), Old (O), or Very Old (V). Fresh pellets indicate recent activity.
